WASHINGTON, D.C. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse sophomore Lindsay Powell darted 30 yards up the field and put the game-winning shot past Georgetown goalie Barb Black as the No. 6 Irish took down the No. 12 Hoyas, 7-6, in double overtime at Multi-Sport Field in Washington, D.C., on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Irish improved to 12-2, 5-2 BIG EAST.
The Hoyas controlled the draw in overtime two to give them a shot at victory. After one shot went high and another shot was blocked by Irish goalie Ellie Hilling, senior Megan Sullivan slapped the ball out of Erin Lovett’s hands and raced down the field. She passed to Powell, who did the rest to clinch the thrilling victory for the Irish.
In overtime the Hoyas had four shots to Notre Dame’s one, but the one proved to be the game winner.
Both teams put together an impressive defensive show as the two goalies combined for 28 saves. Hilling turned in her third-straight 10-plus save game as she tied her career-high with 16. Eight different Irish players caused a turnover and 10 different players scooped up a ground ball.
The two squads entered the half tied at two, and then preceded to trade scores for the remainder of regulation. Georgetown opened the scoring in the second half with a pair of goals in just over a minute to give the Hoyas a 4-2 lead.
The Irish answered back quickly on the strength of two impressive draw controls from freshman Barbara Sullivan. After Sullivan grabbed the first at 19:11, senior Maggie Tamasitis took matters into her own hands with an unassisted goal at 18:44. After the second draw control, Sullivan made a quick pass to fellow freshman Caitlin Gargan, who sprinted down the field and powered a shot past Black at 18:32 to even the score at four. The two goals came just 12 seconds apart.
A goal by Hannah Franklin put the Hoyas back on top at 5-4, but sophomore Lauren Sullivan provided the equalizer at 6:56 off a pass from Tamasitis.
Kaitlyn Brosco gave the Irish the lead with just 3:44 remaining, but the Hoyas forced the game into overtime with a Rosie Corcoran goal at 2:54.
The six goals given up was the second-fewest on the year for Notre Dame, only bested by the five allowed in an 18-5 win against Villanova.
On offense seven different players scored goals for the Irish, while Tamasitis dished out a pair of assists.
The first half was a defensive slugfest with each team managing two goals. Notre Dame got on the board first as Megan Sullivan scored on a dish from Tamasitis. After Georgetown tied the score up at one on a Sophia Thomas goal at 11:34, the Irish again took the lead again after Jaimie Morrison found the back of the cage on a pass from Kelly Driscoll at 5:13. Notre Dame appeared to be poised to take a lead into halftime, but Kelsi Bozel scored with 15 seconds left in the half to even the score heading into the locker room.
In holding Georgetown without a goal for the first 18 minutes of the first half, it was the second-longest to start a game this season for the Irish. Notre Dame held Yale without a goal until 47 seconds left in the half on March 13. Notre Dame also held the Bulldogs to only two goals in the first half, which matches the two goals the Hoyas scored in the first period.
It was only the second tie game at the half for Notre Dame this season, as they also were tied with Louisville (5-5) before winning 13-11.
The Irish return to action this Wednesday when they head to No. 1 Northwestern for an 8 p.m. (ET) game. The Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday to No. 5 Florida. Following the final regular season road trip, Notre Dame welcomes Cincinnati to Arlotta Stadium for a 12 p.m. (ET) start on Senior Day next Saturday.

With Tamasitis’ first assist, she tied the Notre Dame school record for consecutive games with a point at 51. She now shares the record with Caitlin McKinney, whose streak went from April 24, 2005 – April 9, 2008. Her streak began with two assists against Hofstra on Feb. 23, 2010 in her first game during of her sophomore year.
In earning the win in goal, Hilling moved into second place in school history with her 32nd career win. She was previously tied with Jen White (2000-03). The all-time leader is Erin Goodman (2006-09) with 39.
