Registration Open For Fall Irish Softball Clinic

Aug 16, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball team will host its annual fall clinic Sunday, Oct. 6 at Melissa Cook Stadium. Head coach Deanna Gumpf and associate coaches Kris Ganeff and Lizzy Lemire, the 2011 and 2013 BIG EAST Conference Coaching Staff of the Year, and Irish team members will serve as instructors during the one-day skills clinic.

The day’s instruction periods begin with “Hitting Irish Style,” which will take place from 9-11 a.m. in the covered cages of Melissa Cook Stadium. Players will learn the key points of the swing taught by the Irish coaching staff, and will work on the necessary mechanics that are critical to having a powerful and efficient swing. The session is designed for players ages six and up.

A second offensive session will follow in the covered cages from 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m., as the finer points of the short game will be addressed in “Slapping.” Hitters will work on refining the necessary mechanics and fundamentals that are critical to becoming a successful slap hitter. Players ages six and up are encouraged to participate in the session.

The focus will move to the defensive side of the diamond with “Pitching & Catching,” scheduled to run from 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. on the field of Melissa Cook Stadium. Pitchers and catchers will learn the dynamics of being a high level player with drills designed to enhance existing skills and pitch development. Pitchers and catchers will participate separately. All pitchers must bring their own catcher along. The session is open to all players ages nine and up.

The fourth and final instructional period of the clinic, “Great Defensive Players Do…” will round out the day’s schedule from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on the field of Melissa Cook Stadium. Players at all positions except pitcher and catcher will learn the fundamentals and techniques that helped mold Notre Dame into a nationally top-50 ranked defensive team in each of the past five seasons. Players ages nine and up are encouraged to participate.

All four clinic sessions are $75 per session, with checks payable to Notre Dame Softball.
