EAST LANSING, Mich. & BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After four days of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, a pair of University of Notre Dame women’s tennis student athletes remain in contention in singles and doubles.
Senior Monica Robinson and junior Brooke Broda advanced to the doubles title match, defeating DePaul’s Yulia Shupenia and Aspasia Avgeri, 8-7(6), in the quarterfinal before upending second-seeded and fourth-ranked Brienne Minor and Mira Ruder-Hook, 8-5, in the semifinal.
Robinson also advanced to the singles quarterfinals after picking up a 6-3. 7-5 victory over Ohio State’s Ferny Angeles Paz.
Broda and classmate Allison Miller both fell in the singles Round of 16. It was just the third singles loss of Broda’s career and first since March 24.
In wrapping up play at the IU Regional at Indiana University, freshman Bess Waldram captured the Singles Flight 2 title with a 6-0, 3-6, 13-11 win over Indiana’s Caitlin Bernard. Wardram is now 5-1 on the season.
Senior Jane Fennelly was also victorious in a singles consolation match, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Tennessee’s Kim Kermet.
Play will continue at the ITA Midwest Regional on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. ET.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
