Citizen of the Cayman Islands … comes off an outstanding summer of training in Australia … looking forward not only to his senior season with the Irish but the chance to compete internationally for his home country … very versatile … team-oriented … hard worker … pleasant demeanor. As a Junior: Had a first-place finish in the 200 Back (1:54.29) vs. Michigan State … top finisher in the 400 IM (4:05.84) against Pittsburgh … improved on that time at the BIG EAST Championships by clocking in at 3:58.47, which was third-quickest for the team over the course of the season … his fastest times of the campaign in the 200 Breast (2:15.46) and 200 Fly (1:55.03) came against Louisville. As a Sophomore: Registered BIG EAST ‘A’ times in five events (100 Back, 200 Back, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM) … placed 14th in the 100 Back at the BIG EAST Championships with a time of 51.71 … his time of 51.35 in the prelims was a season-best mark … fourth on the team in the 100 Back … top 200 Back time of 1:54.77 came against St. Bonaventure … posted his best 200 Fly mark of 1:56.70 in a dual meet at Michigan State … finished 21st in the prelims of the 200 IM at the BIG EAST Championships with a season-best time of 1:53.09. As a Freshman: Clocked five BIG EAST ‘A’ cuts … those cuts occurred in the 1,650 Free (16:27.29), 100 Back (50.11), 200 Back (1:53.27), 200 IM (1:50.97) and the 400 IM (3:59.26) … posted a conference ‘B’ cut in the 100 Fly (52.49) … placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championships in the 100 Back … was fifth at the conference meet in the 200 IM and ninth in the 400 IM … second on the team during the season in the 100 Back and fifth on the squad in the 200 Back … third for the Irish in both the 200 and 400 IM … accumulated 207 total points on the year (197 individual, 10 Relay) … won four individual races and teamed for one relay victory … won the 400 IM versus Louisville … placed first in the 200 IM in a dual meet at Iowa. The MacKay File: First Olympian in Notre Dame history … finished 33rd in 400 IM and 41st in 200 IM in Athens (2004) … in the latter race, turned in the fastest reaction time (0.59) of any non-backstroker among male and female swimmers competing in the Olympics … ranks second in the history of the program in the 100 Backstroke (50.11) … fifth in school history in the 200 IM (1:50.97) and eighth in the 400 IM (3:59.26) … three-time monogram winner … Cayman Islands record holder in long-course meters in all backstroke, breaststroke, and IM events, as well as the 100 Fly … became Cayman Islands’ first-ever Olympic qualifier … broke his own Cayman Islands national records in both races and improved upon seeding in both events … failed to make the Olympics in his top event (100 Back) but then qualified in the 200 IM (at the 2003 Caribbean Championships in Jamaica) … later improved his 200 IM time and posted another Olympic qualifying time in the 400 IM at the 2003 Pan Am Games … in 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, registered fastest reaction time (0.63 seconds) in the entire 78-swimmer field of the 200 IM, an event in which he finished 48th … became the first Caymanian to advance to the finals in the Pan American Games, doing so in 2003 … earned 31 medals – 14 gold, 11 silver, 6 bronze – at the CARIFTA (Caribbean Free Trade Agreement) Swimming Championships, setting six records on the way … medaled in nine events – 4 gold, 5 silver – in the Island Games, setting three records along the way … lettered twice at Cayman Prep … trains under former United States great Dave Kelsheimer … born Nov. 1, 1985, in the Cayman Islands … son of Sara and Peter MacKay … enrolled in the Mendoza College of Business … an accounting major in the Mendoza College of Business.
