  • 5 All-ACC Honorees
  • 4 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship Qualifiers (3 Different Players, as of 2016)

Catrina Thompson, a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American at the University of Notre Dame, joined the Irish women’s tennis coaching staff in 2013, re-joining the Irish after a two-year stint as an assistant at Boise State.

A standout player for head coach Jay Louderback from 2003-07, Thompson has helped the Irish continue their NCAA Championship appearance streak, now at 21 straight seasons, and advance to the Round of 16 in 2014.

After sweeping DePaul, 4-0, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA tournament, Notre Dame faced off against the host team and heavily favored Northwestern (ranked 16th). The match came down to the final court, where sophomore Julie Vrabel won her match against Nida Hamilton in a third-set tiebreaker, putting the Irish up 4-3 over the Wildcats and advancing them to the Sweet 16 in Athens, Georgia. The Irish fell to second seed Alabama, 4-2, in the Round of 16.

In their first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Championship appearance, the Irish advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-0 victory over Boston College. Notre Dame then fell to second-seed Miami, 4-2. Following her performance at the ACC Championship, senior Britney Sanders was named third team all-ACC.

The Fighting Irish maintained a presence in the top 30 of the ITA poll throughout the 2013-14 season. Notre Dame opened the campaign ranked 21st in the country and finished at 19th, its highest ranking of the season.

The Irish posted a 14-12 mark in 2015, followed by a 14-14 showing in 2016. Both teams made NCAA tournament appearances, extending the Irish streak to 21 seasons.

The Irish have also sent individual participants to NCAA Championships in each of Thompson’s three seasons with the Irish. In 2014, Quinn Gleason qualified for her first NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, advancing to the doubles Round of 16 with partner Britney Sanders. The next season, Gleason and junior Monica Robinson qualified for the doubles events, while Gleason wrapped her career in 2016 with an NCAA Singles appearance

THE BOISE STATE & YALE YEARS

Boise State Highlights

  • 2013 ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year
  • 6 All-Mountain West Conference Selections

Prior to joining the Notre Dame staff, Thompson helped guide Boise State to a 13-10 record in 2013, earning ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors. Boise State players received a total of six all-Mountain West Conference citations during Thompson’s tenure on head coach Beck Roghaar’s staff.

Thompson began her collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Yale University during the 2010-11 season. The Bulldogs posted a 22-5 record and claimed the 2011 Ivy League Championship, ultimately reaching the second round of that year’s NCAA Championship. Yale finished the season as the number 31 team in the final ITA rankings.

PROFESSIONAL & COLLEGIATE CAREER

Following her collegiate playing career at Notre Dame, Thompson was a four-time doubles winner in professional events, claiming a pair of $10,000 tournaments (in St. Joseph, Missouri, and Wichita, Kansas) during the summer of 2006. Thompson added pro doubles victories in Tampico, Mexico, in 2007 and Houston, Texas, in 2008.
