Dorottya Bene, a 25-time Hungarian national champion, veteran of international rowing competition and NCAA Championship participant at Southern Cal, has joined the Notre Dame rowing staff as an assistant coach for the 2024-25 season.
“Dorottya will be a great addition to our coaching staff,” Irish head coach Martin Stone said.
“Her years of international experience can provide an example and guidance to our student-athletes who are working to compete at that level. She also has experience both in and out of the water competing and coaching at the Division I level. We are excited to add her to our program.”
Bene was a member of the Southern Cal rowing team from 2014 through 2019, helping the Trojans to NCAA Championship appearances in the 1V8 (2015) and the 2V8 (2018). Throughout her time at SC she also competed internationally for Hungary, finishing sixth in the European Rowing Championships LX1x in 2014 and eighth at the 2015 Under-23 World Rowing Championships.
Prior to her arrival at Notre Dame, Bene was competing with Hungary’s LW2x at the 2024 European Rowing Championships qualification regatta, finishing in fifth place.
After her graduation from SC in May of 2019, Bene joined the Trojan coaching staff as the third assistant coach from 2020-22, then moved up to second assistant coach and director of operations from 2022-23. She helped the Southern Cal 1V8+ and 1V4+ earn three top six finishes at the Pac-12 Championships from 2022-24. She also has spent time coaching in the Hungarian national program in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Bene has one brother (Barnabas) and two sisters, Judit and Zsofia.
