Rowing Earns Key Victories Over #15 Michigan State

April 21, 2018

The University of Notre Dame rowing team took a step toward an at-large berth in the NCAA Championship regatta on Saturday, April 21, taking on #4 Ohio State and #15 Michigan State at the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus, Ohio.

During the morning session, the Irish faced the fourth-ranked Buckeyes in seven races, finishing in second place in each contest.

“I think we had some good, solid races in the morning,” Irish head coach Martin Stone said after the full day of racing.

“We learned a lot and were able to transfer that to the afternoon racing.”

The afternoon was were the Irish were focused, knowing that Notre Dame and Michigan State will most likely be among the group of teams across the country battling for at-large berths in the NCAA Championship.

Notre Dame responded to that challenge with wins in the Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and a close battle for second in the Second Varsity Eight.

“We did a very good job against Michigan State – one of the stronger programs in the country,” Stone said.

“The Varsity Four went back and forth down the race course, no one gave and inch and were able to get through them late for the win. The Second Varsity Eight got a lead, then MSU came back through and barely squeezed out the win.

“The Varsity Eight took a lead, with stood a charge at the 1,000-meter mark and then pushed away to open it up late.

“Overall we feel good and raced much better than we did last weekend and it showed we are moving in the right direction.”
