ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Notre Dame women’s rowing team opened the 1999-2000 season Sunday with a solid performance at the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, Ill. The Irish competed in four different races covering 2.75 miles.
Notre Dame’s lightweight four teams placed third and ninth in times of 18:33.22 and 19:44.67, respectively. Wisconsin won the race in a time of 18:07.00 followed by Marquette at 18:26.75.
The lightweight eight team had a strong outing as it finished in a time of 16:29.33, good for third place. Wisconsin placed 1-2 in the lightweight eight race with a winning time of 15:18.67, followed by the second-place boat at 16:25.25.
In the open four race, the Irish were fourth and 12th in times of 18:38.26 and 19:16.47, respectively. Iowa was first in a time of 17:57.25, followed by the Minneapolis Boat Club at 18:04.30 and Iowa’s second boat at 18:38.24
The Irish struggled in the open eight race as they placed ninth in a time of 16:28.98 and 11th with a time of 16:39.03. Iowa won the open eight race in 15:28.64.
“We did a good job overall,” head coach Martin Stone said. “We understroked everyone and had a good race. We are looking forward to October 31st.”
The Irish next compete at the Head of the Elk regatta Sunday, Oct., 31, in Elkhart, Ind.
