URBANA, Ill. – University of Notre Dame women’s tennis junior Britney Sanders (Ontario, Calif.) continued her perfect fall season Sunday at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships at the Atkins Tennis Center.
Sanders, the No. 98 ranked singles player according to the ITA, advanced over Michigan’s Amy Zhu 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. Sanders puts her undefeated fall singles record (5-0) on the line against another Wolverine player, No. 9 Emina Bektas, Monday at 12 p.m. (ET) for a spot in the semifinals of the main singles draw.
Along with advancing in singles play, Sanders and partner Julie Sabacinski (Plantation, Fla.) won a pair of matches Sunday to move on to the championship contest of the tournament’s main doubles draw. The No. 36 team in the fall ITA rankings blitzed Ohio State’s Kelsey Dieters and Kara Cecil 8-1 in the quarterfinals before upsetting No. 10 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton (Northwestern) 8-5 in the semifinal round.
Sanders and Sabacinski (8-0) will take on Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White from host Illinois, who downed Chrissie McGaffigan (Davenport, Iowa) and Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) 9-8 (3) to reach the finals, at 10 a.m. (ET) Monday for the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Championship.
