URBANA, Ill. – University of Notre Dame women’s tennis junior Britney Sanders was unable to battle back from an early deficit against No. 27 Zoe Scandalis of Southern California, falling 6-2, 6-1 Wednesday in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship at the Atkins Tennis Center.
The anchor of the Irish lineup during the regular season, Sanders finishes her junior campaign with a 24-15 singles record, with wins in six of her final 10 matches. The BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year was 15-12 in the first position of the Notre Dame rotation during the team’s 18-9 dual season and sixth straight BIG EAST Championship winning squad.
Scandalis, the 27nd-ranked player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, took an early 3-1 advantage in the opening set. The Trojan sophomore scored the win in three of the final four games to take the opening frame 6-2.
It was more of the same in set two, as Scandalis cemented the match victory by claiming the final two games after building a 4-1 edge.
