The sixth-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team scored seven goals in the second half to beat Wisconsin 9-2 on Wednesday at the McClimon Soccer Complex. Irish All-Americans Jen Grubb, Anne Makinen and Jenny Streiffer each scored a pair of goals for the Irish, who improve to 14-4-0 with the win, their 38th consecutive win against a Big 10 team dating back to 1989. Allison Wagner scored twice on Wisconsin’s first two shots for the Badgers, who fall to 7-7-4 with the loss. Notre Dame closes out its regular season at Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 31.
Streiffer’s two goals and two assists increased her career point total to 195 to become Notre Dame’s all-time leading scorer. She eclipsed the previous Notre Dame record of 190 points that Monica Gerardo scored from 1995-98. With her two goals and assist, Makinen has recorded at least one point for the 12th consecutive game, breaking the record she shared with Streiffer, Meotis Erikson and former Irish All-American Holly Manthei. The Irish scored on nine of their 27 shots, while Wisconsin converted two of its five shots for goals. The Badgers had allowed just 17 goals in 17 games before the Irish scored nine goals, the most goals Wisconsin has allowed since a 10-0 Notre Dame win in 1997.
After leading just 2-1 at halftime, Notre Dame sandwiched two goals between Wagner’s second goal to build a 4-2 lead in the 59th minute. Erikson scored the game-winning goal at 56:32 when she finished a give-and-go with Streiffer. Wagner chipped a shot from the right side over Irish goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene just 1:24 later from an Emily Stephens long ball that sailed over Notre Dame’s backline to cut the lead to 3-2 at 57:56. Streiffer gave the Irish a two-goal lead again just 22 seconds later when Erikson slipped a pass to Streiffer, who blasted in a shot from 20 yards on the right wing into the upper left corner of the net at 58:18.
Jenny Heft scored her Irish record 75th career goal at 60:26 when took a pass from Streiffer and dribbled through a pair of defenders at the top of the right corner of the box and fired a shot into left side of the net. Streiffer put the Irish ahead 6-2 at 63:54 when Anne Makinen slipped a pass through the Badger back line to Streiffer, who dribbled from 45 yards and scored past goalkeeper Kelly Conway from five yards for Notre Dame’s fourth goal in a span of 7:22.
The Irish then closed out the scoring with three goals in 3:12, beginning with a chip from Makinen from 20 yards that floated over goalkeeper Kate Spittane at 73:32. Makinen scored again at 75:53 when she tapped a pass from Monica Gonzalez in front of the net from a Jen Grubb corner kick. Irish Lancaster closed out the scoring at 76:44 when she fired a shot from the top of the box from a pass from inside the box from Kelly Tulisiak.
Notre Dame took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to a pair of goals by Grubb after both teams combined for three goals in 3:25. Grubb opened the scoring with a volley from a header from Erikson from a corner kick from Kara Brown at 12:35. Wagner quickly tied the game at 13:22 when she won the ball near the left sideline. She dribbled to just inside the left corner of the box and lofted shot into the right corner of the net. Grubb then headed in a corner kick at 15:55 for the first two-goal game of her career.
