NOTRE DAME, Ind. — University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse standouts John Sexton and Carlson Milikin were selected in the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft on Wednesday evening held in Sparks, Maryland.
The Dallas Rattlers made Sexton, an Inside Lacrosse First Team Midseason All-American, the No. 18 overall pick in the second round. Milikin followed, as the Ohio Machine took the senior in the fourth round with the 36th overall selection.
Sexton becomes the 10th Notre Dame player selected in the first two rounds of the MLL Draft in program history. The Irish have now had six players taken in the first two rounds in the last four years.
The Boston Cannons selected Denver’s Trevor Baptiste with the first pick in the 2018 MLL Draft.
Sexton (Sudbury, Massachusetts) has been a standout both on and off the field for the Irish over his four years at Notre Dame. Sexton earned USILA First Team All-American honors following the 2017 campaign. As a junior, he was named to the All-ACC Team and All-ACC Academic Team.
Sexton has played an integral role in the team’s success over the last few seasons. The LSM led the Irish to an appearance in the NCAA Championship semifinals (2015) and NCAA Championship quarterfinals (2016 & 2017) as well as the 2017 ACC Tournament final. He was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2017.
The senior is a two-time All-ACC selection (2016, 2017). Sexton has scored 10 goals in his career and has created havoc on defense, forcing 64 turnovers and scooping 168 ground balls.
Milikin has played a major role in the defensive unit for the Irish this season, playing with a tenacity that gives the Irish an edge. The short-stick defensive midfielder has played in every game for Notre Dame this season, causing six turnovers and collecting five ground balls. The senior has not recorded a single turnover through 10 games this season.
The 2018 season is the second for Milikin with Notre Dame. Milikin graduated from Virginia before coming to the Irish as a graduate transfer for the 2017 season. The SSDM suffered a season-ending injury before the 2017 campaign began and worked his way back to be ready for the 2018 season.
