Ann Arbor, Mich. – The University of Michigan’s Yost Ice Arena has been a house of horrors for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team over the past 18 years.

Things didn’t change much on Tuesday night as the sixth-ranked Michigan Wolverines got hat tricks from Mark Kosick and Mike Cammalleri and goaltender Josh Blackburn made 21 saves as the Wolverines shutout the Fighting Irish, 9-0, in a mid-week CCHA tilt.

The loss, the worst for the Irish since an 11-1 loss at Michigan on Jan. 20, 1996, drops Notre Dame to 5-18-5 on the season and 3-12-4 in league play. Michigan goes to 18-6-4 on the season and pulls to within three points of first place Michigan State with a 12-4-4 mark in the CCHA.

Notre Dame has not won a regular season contest at Michigan since Oct. 22, 1982 and is now just 1-16 at Yost Arena since that win.

Michigan didn’t give the Irish a chance to feel at home on Tuesday night as they came out fast and furious in the first period scoring twice in the first 3:02.

Center John Shouneyia got the scoring started at the 1:09 mark as he intercepted an Irish clearing pass at the blueline and beat ND’s Kyle Kolquist (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) with a hard wrister from between the hash marks for his eighth of the year.

The Wolverine’s continued the constant first period pressure on the way to out shooting the Irish 19-8 in the opening stanza.

Mike Cammalleri made the score 2-0 at 3:02 when Andy Hilbert’s pass from the left wing appeared to be heading wide of the goal before hitting Cammalleri’s skate and deflecting past Kolquist. The goal was Cammalleri’s 16th of the season.

Notre Dame’s defense stiffened, but Michigan broke through on the power play when Mark Kosick unleashed a blast from the top of the left wing circle that beat Kolquist to the top right corner stick side for his seventh of the season at 16:21.

It was more of the same in the second period as the Wolverines scored four times to up the lead to 7-0.

Defenseman Mike Roemensky scored his second goal of the season when his long shot from the left point beat Kolquist at 5:27. That goal chased Kolquist who finished with 20 saves on the night.

Changing goaltenders did nothing to slow down the Michigan offense as the Wolverines got to Jeremiah Kimento (Jr., Palos Hills, Ill.) for three more goals in the period.

Cammalleri got his second of the game at 8:15 on a wrister that snuck threw the junior goaltender’s pads. Geoff Koch got his eighth of the season at 17:39 and Kosick got his second of the night to close the scoring at 18:47.

Kosick and Cammalleri closed out their hat tricks in the third period as Michigan outshot the Irish 15-3 in the period on the way to a 51-21 edge in the game.

Kosick scored from the slot at 4:22 for his ninth of the season and Cammalleri cashed in on the power play at 12:10 for his 18th of the season.

Kimento finished the game with 22 saves.

The Irish will look to regroup this weekend when they return to action at New Haven, Conn. for a pair of games with the Yale Bulldogs on Jan. 27-28. Saturday’s game begins at 4:00 p.m. at the New Haven Coliseum. Sunday’s game is a 1:00 p.m. start at Yale’s Ingalls Arena.

IRISH NOTES: The 51 shots on goal were the most given up by the Irish in a game this season surpassing the 50 surrendered to Lake Superior State on Dec. 2.

The shutout snapped Dan Carlson (Sr., Edina, Minn.) and Ryan Dolder’s (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) nine-game scoring streaks…Carlson had seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in his streak and Dolder had six goals and seven assists for 13 points.

Since rejoining the CCHA for the 1992-93 season, the Irish are 3-33-1 versus Michigan. The Wolverines lead the all-time series that started in 1921-22 by a 53-38-3 margin.
