NOTRE DAME, Ind. โ University of Notre Dame womenโs lacrosse standout Margaret Smith has earned a spot on the BIG EASTโs Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday.
Smith had eight ground balls and nine caused turnovers in two games as the Irish saw their rally fall short against then-No. 4/4 Northwestern Wednesday before dropping Marquette Saturday to conclude the regular season at 12-4.
Against the Wildcats, the Westminster, Md., native had three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Three days later she led the team with five ground balls and five caused turnovers in earning a win over the Golden Eagles.
A 2012 third team All-American, Smith leads the BIG EAST and sits eighth nationally with 2.06 caused turnovers a game. The dynamic player has been effective all over the field as she has 14 goals, 35 ground balls, 35 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers. The 33 caused turnovers put her in eighth place in school history for a season.
In the Irish record books Smith is seventh in caused turnovers with 79 and tied for seventh in draw controls with 103.
Smith and the Irish finished in a tie for fourth in the BIG EAST and missed this weekโs conference tournament based on the head-to-head tiebreaker with Connecticut. However, the 12-4 Irish have an outstanding shot at an at-large berth in the NCAA Championship. The selection show will be on NCAA.com at 9 p.m. May 5.
