The University of Notre Dame softball team (5-2) fell to 1-1 at the 2004 Palm Springs Classic with a 12-1, five-inning loss to Pacific (10-1) late Friday evening. Both teams were scoreless over the first three innings, but a one hour, 24 minute rain delay seemed to put the Irish to sleep. After the delay, Pacific exploded for 12 runs in two innings off three Notre Dame pitchers (Steffany Stenglein, Carrie Wisen and Kenya Fuemmeler).
The lone bright spot for Notre Dame in the game came in the bottom of the fourth, as a two-out RBI single from senior Nicole deFau broke up a no-hitter bid for Pacific’s Jennifer Dacre.
Pacific dealt most of the damage in the game during the fifth inning, scoring nine runs off six hits and two Notre Dame errors.
Stenglein takes the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Notre Dame will get a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 21) when they face #8/8 Stanford at 1:00 p.m. The Irish will also face the U.S. Olympic Team in an exhibition on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
