The 19th-ranked University of Notre Dame softball team (1-0) earned its first win of the season 4-1 over Maryland in the first round of the Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by the University of South Florida, Friday, Feb. 16. The Irish will face South Florida tonight at 6 p.m.
Notre Dame was led by a strong pitching performance by preseason BIG EAST Pitcher-of-the-Year Jen Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.). Sharron faced 22 batters, struck out nine and only gave up four hits.
The Irish offense was led by four players who managed two hits each in the game. Junior Jenny Kriech (Indianapolis, Ind.) gave the Irish a three-run cushion with a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning. Jarrah Myers (Carbondale, Kan.) led the inning off with a double, then Lizzy Lemire (Irvine, Calif.) singled. Both Myers and Lemire would score on Kriech’s single.
Danielle Klayman (San Diego, Calif.) scored Notre Dame’s fourth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, reaching on an error and eventually scoring on Kriech’s second single and third RBI of the game.
Jessica Sharron (Agoura Hills, Calif.) pitched the sixth inning for the Irish and gave up the lone Terrapin run on the day after a throwing error advanced a runner to thirdand was eventually doubled home.
Freshman pitcher Kristin Schmidt (Houston, Texas) will make her collegiate debut tonight against host South Florida at 6 p.m.
