Spartans Outlast #12 Irish, 6-2

DETROIT, Mich. — The 12th-ranked Notre Dame baseball team (26-9) dropped its midweek contest to Michigan State (17-21), 6-2, Tuesday night at Comerica Park in Detroit. After tying the game in the top of the sixth, the Spartans ripped off the final four runs of the game to clinch the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring twice in the opening inning.

The Irish got a run back in the third as Brooks Coetzee III singled through the left side to score Carter Putz. The RBI single cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

The Irish tied the game up in the top of the sixth as Jack Brannigan doubled down the line in left. It got all the way to the wall and allowed Jared Miller to score from first to tie the game at 2-2.

Michigan State regained the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh.

UP NEXT

The Irish return to campus for their second to last ACC home series of the season. They will take on Boston College at Frank Eck Stadium for a three-game series starting Friday night. The series opener is set for 5 p.m. ET and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Members of the 2002 College World Series team, including former head coach Paul Mainieri, will be in town and honored over the course of the weekend series.
