Jim Marlatt And Stephen O’Hara To Captain The Irish

Strong leadership usually is an essential part of any successful team and this season’s Notre Dame men’s lacrosse squad will look to seniors Jim Marlatt and Stephen O’Hara to set the tone for the upcoming campaign. Marlatt, a midfielder, and O’Hara, a defenseman, have been selected team captains for the 2014 season, which will be Notre Dame’s first as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. -
Stephen O’Hara Picked By Ohio Machine In MLL Draft

University of Notre Dame defenseman Stephen O’Hara was selected by the Ohio Machine with the first pick of the sixth round (41st overall) of the 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft, which was held Friday in Philadelphia, Pa.O’Hara (West Chester, Pa./St. Joe’s Prep) has started every game over the last two seasons in Notre Dame’s close defense, which has been one of the best in the nation over that time. The University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team checks in at No. 4 in the Inside Lacrosse preseason rankings and the Fighting Irish will face the other top-nine squads during the 2014 regular season. Notre Dame Looks To Maintain Successful Stretch In Another New League

Clearly the cold South Bend winter has not affected the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team as the fifth-ranked Fighting Irish were red-hot in Sunday’s 19-7 season-opening victory over Jacksonville in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Lacrosse Classic at EverBank Field.Notre Dame (1-0) used 13 different goal scorers en route to the program’s 12th straight victory in a season opener. No. 4 Notre Dame scored four of the game’s last five goals but it wasn’t enough as No. 12 Penn State spoiled the Fighting Irish home opener with an 8-7 decision in men’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium. Penn State (2-1) increased its two-goal (5-3) halftime edge to four with early third-quarter scores from Shane Sturgis and TJ Sanders. Joining the nation’s strongest men’s lacrosse league was going to lead to some memorable games and No. 11 Notre Dame made its first contest in the Atlantic Coast Conference unforgettable with a thrilling 11-10 come-from-behind victory at No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field.Notre Dame (2-1, 1-0) trailed 8-3 early in the third quarter, yet responded with five unanswered goals to tie the game up less than 30 seconds into the final period. The rally began on a goal from Matt Kavanagh, who had three goals and two assists in the contest. Midfielder Tyler Brenneman sliced the deficit to three (8-5) with his first goal of the season. On a perfect California day it was an imperfect result for the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team as the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish fell to No. 12 Denver, 10-7, in the inaugural Pacific Coast Shootout at LeBard Stadium on the campus of Orange Coast College.Denver (4-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 6:14 mark of the opening quarter with scores from Erik Adamson, who had six goals in the game, and Jack Bobzien. Attackman Westy Hopkins put the Irish on the board with 5:21 remaining in the opening quarter, but consecutive tallies from Adamson and a man-up deposit from Zach Miller gave the Pioneers a 5-1 advantage just over two minutes into the second period. After tallying a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists in Saturday’s 18-17 win over Army, Notre Dame senior attackman John Scioscia (Summit, N.J./Summit) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.The six goals tied a career-best mark for Scioscia and the eight points were one shy of matching the program record. A Matt Kavanagh goal in overtime gave No. 6 seed Notre Dame a thrilling 14-13 victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in front of a sellout and stadium-record crowd of 13,519 at James M. Shuart Stadium.The Fighting Irish (11-5) trailed 12-7 with just over eight minutes remaining in the contest before ending regulation on a 6-1 run. The surge began on a Nick Ossello goal, which snapped a 6-0 Albany run, and Westy Hopkins scored less than a minute later to make it a three-goal affair. Tallies from Conor Doyle and Sergio Perkovic 36 seconds apart cut the Albany lead to one (12-11) with 6:19 left to play. (read more)
