Carol Owens Named Associate Women’s Basketball Coach At Notre Dame

No. 12 Irish Fall Just Short to No. 9 Kentucky, 81-76

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw glanced at the stat sheet at halftime, saw No. 9 Kentucky was struggling from 3-point range and told her team to let the Wildcats keep shooting. Bad idea. Kentucky guard Keyla Snowden got hot, redshirt freshman Bernisha Pinkett did, too, and Victoria Dunlap did the rest, as Kentucky held off the 12th-ranked Irish 81-76 on Sunday. (read more)

Faris scored a career-high 20 points, including a layup with 14 seconds left that allowed No. 2 Connecticut to escape with a 79-76 victory over No. 13 Notre Dame on Saturday. Rutgers could only withstand No. 8 Notre Dame’s pressure for so long. Rutgers remained within striking distance for the first 30 minutes, but Notre Dame’s press finally cracked the Scarlet Knights and the Fighting Irish went on a 16-3 run midway through the second half for a 71-49 victory Saturday. Skylar Diggins Named Semifinalist For Nation’s Top Point Guard Award

Notre Dame sophomore guard Skylar Diggins (South Bend, Ind./Washington) is among a group of 11 players who have been selected as semifinalists for the 2011 Nancy Lieberman Award, given to the nation’s top point guard, it was announced Saturday by the award’s organizer, the Rotary Club of Detroit. Diggins is the only underclass player among the 11 remaining nominees, joining eight seniors and two juniors in contention for this year’s award. (read more)

Notre Dame Earns 16th Consecutive NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Berth

For the 16th consecutive season, and the 18th time in school history, Notre Dame has earned a berth in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. The Fighting Irish are the No. 2 seed in the Dayton Region and will play 15th-seeded Utah (the Mountain West Conference tournament champion) at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. MT) Saturday at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Trio Earns All-Region Honors

For the second consecutive year (and the second time in school history), three Notre Dame women’s basketball players have earned all-region status in the same season and now are in position to contend for places on the 2011 State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, it was announced Wednesday afternoon by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The Fighting Irish are one of only three programs in the country (along with Baylor and Stanford) to field three all-region honorees this season, and Notre Dame is the only school in the land to have three all-region selections each of the last two years.
