Thomas Volkenburg 2009-10 Swimming and Diving Roster

AS A SENIOR: Registered two top eight finishes (one individual, one relay) at the BIG EAST Championships … member of the fourth-place 200 free relay in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:20.67 and swam to a sixth-place finish in the 100 back (49.67) … the preliminary swim of the 100 back (49.49) was a personal record … logged season-best times of 21.35 in the 50 free and 45.83 in the 100 free at the Hawkeye Invitational … another season best performance of 1:40.37 in the 200 free came in the preliminary session at the league championships … finished his Notre Dame career as the fifth best performer in the 100 back and the sixth best swimmer in the 100 free in Notre Dame history.

AS A JUNIOR:Primarily a freestyle specialist throughout the season … set season best marks at the BIG EAST Championships … stopped the clock at 21.11 in the 50 free, 45.92 in the 100 free and 1:40.12 in the 200 free at the league’s preliminary session for top season times as an exhibition swimmer… topped out at a 52.76 in the 100 back at the Shamrock Invitational … had one top three finish on the regular season in the 100 free (against Michigan State).

AS A SOPHOMORE: Went 20.96 in the 50 free at the BIG EAST Championships … also finished the year by going 45.02 at the league meet in the 100 free … best 200 free (1:42.36) swim was logged at the Ohio State Invitational … swam the 100 back in 50.55 at the league meet.

AS A FRESHMAN: Ranked among Notre Dame’s top five performers in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back … had a blazing 50 free (21.28) performance at the Ohio State Invitational … also drove in a 100 free mark of 46.47 as an exhibition swimmer at BIG EAST Championships … swam the 50 back (25.35) against Cleveland State … also swam the 100 back (53.10) at the Ohio State Invitational … took a shot at the 100 fly (52.06) at the BIG EAST meet.

THE VAN VOLKENBURG FILE: Named team captain and declared MVP by coach Neil Postas as a senior at Cathedral (Pa.) … gained 12 All-America distinctions as well as an Academic All-America honor during his prep tenure … delivered times of 46.79 (100 free) and 52.01 (100 back) … held eight of his high school team’s varsity records … lettered four times as member of water polo team … National Honor Society member … played in school band … sat on high school’s student council … son of Deborah and Thomas Van Volkenburg … born March 13, 1989, in Erie, Pa. … graduated from the Mendoza College of Business as a marketing major.
