Bio

Clive Brewer joined the University of Notre Dame in Jan 2025 and serves as the Director of Olympic Strength and Conditioning.

In his role, he is responsible for leading and managing a department focused on maximizing the physical development of Notre Dame’s Olympic sports student-athletes, leading the body of work focused on reducing the risk of injury and enhancing strength, power, endurance, and movement quality. As a member of the Sports Performance Leadership Team, Clive works collaboratively with other Sports Performance disciplines to ensure the holistic support of our student-athletes.

Prior to his current role, Clive was the Director of Human Performance for Arizona Athletics in Phoenix, where he oversaw all aspects of athlete performance health for professional athletes from a range of sports including the NBA, MBA, NFL & Team USA. He also oversaw multiple youth development strength and conditioning programs serving a range of sports clubs & individual athletes from middle school to collegiate level. He is a faculty member for the International Science in Soccer Federation, the BU / CHOP Primary Sports Medicine Fellowship & West Virginia University College for Applied Health Sciences.

Clive has had over 2 decades coaching elite athletes, working with some of the most recognized teams in international sport. These include Toronto Blue Jays, Manchester United, Liverpool FC, Columbus Crew, IMG, IAAF, Widnes Vikings & England Rugby League. He was also part of the sports medicine faculty at 20 consecutive Wimbledon Tennis Championships from 2000 and has coached athletes from a range of sports at every summer Olympics since that year. During his time as National Program Manager for Athlete Development with SportScotland, Clive also served as the 1st National Strength & Conditioning Coach for Track & Field. In these roles Clive had a leading role in the delivery of high-performance services (Sports medicine, Science, Physical development, mental performance, nutrition) & culture that has supported teams to play-off success, multiple National championships as well as World cup quarter finals and European Championships with International teams.

Certified in the USA, UK and Australia as an elite strength and conditioning coach, and a chartered scientist with the UK Science council, Clive was honored by the UKSCA in 2014 with the prestigious Honorary Fellowship award. In 2024 his 25 years of service to the industry was recognized by the NSCA with the award of Emeritus Registered strength & conditioning coach.

Clive graduated from Loughborough University (UK) with a master’s degree in sports science, and from Brunel University College, London with a first class (hons) Batchelor’s degree in Sports Science. He has served on the Board for the UK Strength and conditioning Association (2003-2014) and has previously been the Chairperson for the Interdisciplinary (Applied practice) section of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science. He has published 3 books and numerous book chapters and academic papers on applied training principles and is a popular keynote speaker at International conferences.

Clive lives with his wife Linda, also a native of Scotland, Uk, and they proudly became Citizens of the USA in 2022. Linda also works in sport, and is the program lead for the international Women in Sport High Performance coaching program, funded by Olympic Solidarity. His daughter Georgina rides horses and lives in Yorkshire, England.
