PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The sixth-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team used a goal and two assists from senior All-American Jenny Streiffer for a 4-0 win at Rutgers Sunday in a BIG EAST Conference Mid-Atlantic division game at Yurcak Field. The Irish outshot the Scarlet Knights 23-4 in the contest and did not allow Rutgers to put a shot on goal. Notre Dame improves to 6-2-0 and 2-0-0 in the Mid-Atlantic division with the win. Rutgers falls to 5-3-0, 1-1-0. The Irish return to action with another Mid-Atlantic division game against Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 1, at Alumni Field.
Junior All-American Anne Makinen opened the scoring when she dribbled through a pair of Rutgers defenders and scored past the Scarlet Knight’s extended goalkeeper Angel Hadaway. Streiffer slipped a ball through the midfield to Makinen to assist on the game-winning goal for the second consecutuve game. Senior All-American defender Jen Grubb converted her third free kick of the season and second in as many games when she scored from 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the net at 33:09 for a 2-0 lead.
Streiffer converted a penalty kick at 37:27 after she was fouled by Uchenna Bright attempting to make a turn in the box for a 3-0 halftime lead. Junior forward Meotis Erikson scored the only goal of the second half when Streiffer slipped a ball through the backline to Erikson just outside the box. Erikson dribbled through the box and scored from five yards at 52:10 to close out the scoring.
The Irish had two shots hit off the crossbar and one off the right post early in the game before Makinen gave the Irish a 1-0 lead. Makinen’s goal marked her eighth in four games at Yurcak. She scored a hat trick against Rutgers in 1997 and had a goal against Villanova and another hat trick against Connecticut during the 1997 BIG EAST championship. Makinen had three shots in the second half, the first two saved by Hadaway from point-blank range and another shot blasted off the crossbar from 25 yards. In five games Notre Dame has played all-time at Yurcak Field, site of the 1999 BIG EAST Championship, the Irish are 5-0-0 with a 27-2 scoring advantage.
