EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team held its position in the field after a 36-hole start to the tournament on Saturday, carding a final round score of 306 (299-301-306-906) to earn third place Sunday at the Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational on the Forest Akers West Golf Course. The event was the first official team start for the Irish during the 2013-14 season.

Junior Ashley Armstrong recorded her best 18-hole score of the season during Sunday’s final round, posting a team-best three-under par 69 to tie for second place in the individual competition at four-over par 220 (76-75-69). Armstrong ranked second overall in the field with nine birdies during the tournament, including four on Sunday, and led all 93 players by playing the course’s par-4 holes in even par for the week.

Armstrong picked up her first stroke of the final round with a birdie at the par-4 sixth hole, and moved to one-under on the day with another birdie at the 497-yard eighth hole to make the turn in 35 shots. A string of five straight pars for the Flossmoor, Ill. native, was broken by a birdie at the par-4 14th hole, lifting Armstrong to two-under par for the day. A second birdie in three holes at the par-4 16th gave Armstrong an inward two-under 34, securing co-runner-up honors.

Junior Kelli Oride claimed the third top-10 finish of her Notre Dame career after posting a three-round score of 223 (72-74-77) to tie for seventh place. Oride was second in the field with 43 total pars in 54 holes, including 13 par saves during the final round.

Senior Kristina Nhim (76-78-78-232) shared 34th place in the final results, while sophomore Talia Campbell posted a 44th-place (75-77-82-234) finish. Freshman Jordan Ferreira rounded the Irish starting lineup with a tie for 53rd place (79-75-84-238).

Michigan State fired a combined team score of 892 (288-296-308) to win the tournament championship by four strokes over runner-up Ohio State (296-296-304). Notre Dame, Northwestern (302-303-302-907) and Oregon (303-299-306-908) made up the remainder of the top five scoring teams.

Michigan State’s Liz Nagel gave the host Spartans a clean sweep by earning individual medalist honors, posting a final round 74 (68-75-74-217, +1) to win by three strokes. Ohio State’s Illen Domela (71-73-76) and Northwestern’s Kaitlin Park (73-74-73) joined Armstrong in second place at four-over par 220, while Oregon’s Caroline Inglis (75-75-71-221, +5) finished in fifth place.
