MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The No. 10 Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team scored five of the game’s final six goals to capture a 12-7 victory over Marquette on Tuesday afternoon at Uihlein Park. Midfielders Trevor Brosco and Jim Marlatt both recorded hat tricks for the Fighting Irish, who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
Notre Dame (5-4) led 4-2 at halftime, yet Marquette netted the first two goals of the second half as part of a 3-0 run, which began late in the second quarter, to make things all even less than two minutes into the third period. The Fighting Irish reclaimed a two-goal advantage with a man-up tally from Marlatt and Brosco’s first goal of the day, which came 27 seconds later. Matt Kavanagh, who had three assists in the contest, set up both scores.
Marquette (4-8) trimmed the Irish lead back to one on a Kyran Clarke goal, but Brosco, who netted all three of his goals in the third quarter, took a feed from Marlatt and scored to make it 7-5 with just under 10 minutes left in the period. Following a man-up goal from Marquette’s Ryan McNamara, Brosco and Conor Doyle deposited scores in the final 35 seconds of the stanza to give the Fighting Irish a 9-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. It was the first career multiple-goal game for Brosco, a sophomore.
The Golden Eagles would not go away as Conor Gately sliced their deficit back to two (9-7) in the early stages of the final period. Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until Sergio Perkovic hammered home Notre Dame’s 10th goal with just over four minutes remaining in the contest. John Scioscia produced his second goal of the afternoon less than a minute later and then Marlatt, a senior, put the finishing touches on his fifth career hat trick with 41 seconds left on the clock.
“We didn’t have a lot of energy and we didn’t seem to have our legs, but we found a way to win and we feel good about that,” Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan said. “It looked like we were going to pull away a couple times, but they kept coming back over and over again. We made the plays that we needed to in order to get the win.”
Over nine minutes elapsed in the game before the first goal was scored and that came from Marquette’s Kyle Whitlow. Scioscia tied things up, 1-1, with 56 seconds left in the first quarter and that score ignited a 4-0 Fighting Irish run.
Notre Dame grabbed a 2-1 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half on a man-up goal from Marlatt and sophomore midfielder Bobby Gray pushed the Irish advantage to two just over a minute later with the first goal of his career. A man-up score from Doyle, who had two goals and one assist in the game, gave the Fighting Irish a three-goal cushion with 3:10 left in the opening half. Notre Dame was 3-of-4 in man-up opportunities on the day.
“Today we were really smart and patient with the ball in our man-up opportunities,” Corrigan said. “It was good to see Jim Marlatt get some goals and I thought Trevor Brosco did a nice job at cutting and putting shots on goal.”
Marquette cut the Irish lead back to two with 20 seconds remaining in the half on a Blaine Fleming goal and Notre Dame led 4-2 at the intermission.
Notre Dame outshot Marquette 36-34 and Fighting Irish freshman goalie Shane Doss made five saves in the victory. His counterpart, Jimmy Danaher, had nine stops for the Golden Eagles. The Irish went 12-of-22 in faceoffs. Senior Liam O’Connor was 11-of-20 in the X and junior Nick Ossello was 1-of-2.
The Fighting Irish are back in action Saturday when they play host to Robert Morris. The non-conference tilt is slated for 1 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium. A free broadcast of the game will be available on WatchND.tv.
