Summer Internships: Abby Maichin

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – This summer our student-athletes were hard at work off the field gaining life experiences in their desired fields. Here’s Abby Maichin’s story:

Where did you spend your summer?
SNY (SportsNet New York), in New York City. I mostly worked in the office in the World Trade Center, but also at both Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.
What was your position at the company?
I was their Content, Production, and Strategic Planning Intern.
What were some of the biggest things you learned from your internship?
I learned the importance of building relationships. Being in a work environment with people that you genuinely like to be around makes some of the harder days not so bad.
How did you find this internship?
Constantly making connections through my Notre Dame network and on LinkedIn.
What were some challenges you faced at your internship?
In sports media, you are constantly waiting for the news to come at you. In the summer, the only sport that is in season is baseball, and football training camp starting at the end of the summer. I really enjoy being in a fast-paced environment and always having something to do to keep myself busy, but a lot of times in the summer that is not the case because there isn’t much content coming at you at all hours of the day as compared to the winter or fall.
Biggest takeaway from the internship you can relate to in lacrosse?
My biggest takeaway would be the importance of teamwork. Broadcasts and news television shows can not be produced without so many moving pieces from countless different avenues and people. You have to have a good and collaborative team to be successful in media.
Do you plan to work for said company following graduation?
No. Although I really enjoyed my time at SNY, I realized that my interests reside more on the inside with professional sports teams and organizations rather than on the outside with media.
Other fun summer adventures you want to include?
I lived with my teammate, Ali McHugh, in New York City. I also went to Maine with my family and just finished the summer off in Ireland for the Notre Dame football game vs. Navy.
