SOUTH BEND, Ind. – This summer our student-athletes were hard at work off the field gaining life experiences in their desired fields. Here’s Keelin Schlageter’s story:
Where did you spend your summer?
I spent my summer and Barclays Corporate and Investment Bank in its New York City office.
What was your position at the company?
I was a Sales and Trading summer analyst. I rotated on the US Rates Sales, Fixed Income Financing and High Touch Equities Trading desks .
What were some of the biggest things you learned from your internship?
The opportunity was enriching in many ways. I learned about many asset classes in practice as well as the best ways to communiate and engage with clients on the sales side. I was able to apply some concepts that I learn about in my economics and finance courses. I had the opportunity to engage with senior level management throughout the program and learned about the various opportunities that Barclays has to offer as well.
How did you find this internship?
I found the internship through networking with lacrosse alums. The Notre Dame Network has been a huge support though recruiting and navigating the industry.
What were some challenges you faced at your internship?
I found it difficult to ask questions sometimes because the environment is very fast paced but finding the time and people who want to mentor me played a huge role in understanding the various desks and products. Personally, the structure of my day was quite different that I am used to so finding a routine that worked was a challenge at first.
Biggest takeaway from the internship you can relate to in lacrosse?
Clarity and speed of communication plays a huge role in lacrosse and on the trading floor. I also saw teamwork play a huge role on desks but also across desks within the bank. You only get out what you put in which applies to both lacrosse and the industry.
Do you plan to work for said company following graduation?
Yes! I accepted a return offer and will start in July 2024.
Other fun summer adventures you want to include?
I went to Michigan for my brother’s engagement party and spent the weekends in NYC with both of my older siblings!
