LAS VEGAS – The No. 11 Notre Dame doubles team of Catrina and Christian Thompson opened up action from the Freeman Memorial Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship with an 8-4 victory over Carmen Seremeta and Claudia Hirt of Oregon Friday afternoon. The twin sisters will face Ashley Joelson and Alex McGoodwin of UCLA on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
The Thompsons, graduates of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, improved to 8-3 this season and 80-34 for their career.
Already holding the school record for most doubles wins by a team, Catrina moved into a tie for 14th all-time in doubles victories with 84, while Christian moved into a tie for 15th with 83.
Singles action was postponed due to inclement weather. A rare winter storm moved into the valley and temperatures dipped into the low 30s.
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, will continue on Saturday – weather permitting — with doubles at 11 a.m. PST and then follow with a round of singles.
