Three Pairs Advance on Day 1 of Mini Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s tennis team got the Fighting Irish Mini Duals underway on Friday with 11 total teams participating. The schedule for the day saw everyone play doubles first followed by singles before a second round of doubles. To advance, the pair must win 2 of the 3 matches against their opposing players.

Three Irish tandems advanced through the first round of action with team victories. The freshmen pairing of Peter Nad and Luis Llorens would get their first collegiate win on their home courts with a come from behind doubles victory against Louisville. Then Llorens would clinch the team win with a very strong straight set win to give the needed second point by a 6-4, 7-5 scoreline. Peter fell in two close sets but advanced alongside his partner.

Chase Thompson and Karan Magimay would take their doubles set 6-1 over Northwestern and as convincingly, Magimay won 6-2, 6-0. Thompson would make it a perfect 3-0 round with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(9) win in his singles match, coming back from 8-4 down in the third set tiebreak.

Senior duo You Zhang and Jamie Corsillo dropped a tightly contested doubles set in a tiebreak. But the veterans would response in singles with Zhang winning 6-1, 6-4 setting up his partner Corsillo to clinch the team win with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Indiana.

The final Irish team of Brian Bilsey and Jayanth Devaiah took on the #2 seeded team from Illinois and unfortunately dropped the round 3-0 to the Illini. But a quick response in the next round of doubles saw them take out Ohio State 6-2 headed in to tomorrow’s singles.

Thompson and Magimay also got another doubles win and made it an unblemished 4-0 record as they took out Michigan State in round two of doubles.

Play on Saturday will begin at 9am in the Eck Tennis Pavilion with everyone playing the 2nd round of singles. Then the entire third round will be completed tomorrow so another doubles and singles match for each player is on the docket.
