BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Brook Buck (Yukon, Okla./Oklahoma Christian School) upset the nation’s 37th-ranked singles player to highlight play for the University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team on the opening day of play in the Indiana Invitational Friday in the IU Tennis Center. In addition to Buck’s first victory over a nationally-ranked foe, the Irish went unbeaten in three doubles matches.
Notre Dame, which is playing without its top two players, lost four of six in singles against the host school before sweeping three doubles matches against DePaul.
Buck won a match tiebreaker to upset #37 Dora Vastag of Indiana 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 1-0 (10-5). The rookie improved to 8-3 this fall and was victorious in just her second collegiate match against a ranked player.
Buck teamed with junior Lauren Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness H.S.) for an 8-3 win in doubles against Marina Parashkevova and Beatrix Csordas of DePaul.
Sophomore Liz Donohue (Sioux Falls, S.D./O’Gorman H.S.) also was unbeaten on the day, dropping only two games. She beat Indiana’s Kara Zeder 6-1, 6-0 in singles before pairing with freshman Bailey Louderback (South Bend, Ind./Penn H.S.) to win 8-1 against the Blue Demon duo of Bojana Murisic and Anja Mihaldinec.
Notre Dame’s other victory came from senior captain Sarah Jane Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness H.S.) and junior Kristina Stastny (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s Academy), who beat DePaul’s Gregana Ganeva and Petra Rehusova 8-1
The Indiana Invitational employs hidden dual scoring, which means that teams play simulated dual matches, but no team scores are recorded.
