Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame volleyball team (4-1) got 16 kills from sophomore opposite Kristy Kreher to defeat Kentucky 15-9, 15-9, 15-9 in its first match of the BIG Orange Bash at Clemson University in South Carolina.
Kreher (Birmingham, Mich.) was helped offensively by junior Jo Jameyson’s (Alvin, Texas) nine kills, while senior co-captain Mary Leffers (Tampa, Fla.) and outside hitter Christi Girton (Muncie, Ind.) both added nine. Setter Denise Boylan (Lisle, Ill.) had 50 assists and sophomore middle blocker Malinda Goralski (Missouri City, Texas) was perfect in 14 attempts, tallying seven kills.
The Irish posted a .292 hitting percentage to Kentucky’s .153 mark, while Notre Dame also out blocked the Wildcats by a 14-7 margin. Leffers tied her career-high in a three-game match with nine blocks.
Kentucky (4-2) was led by Kristen Batt’s 14 kills and Katie Eiserman’s 13 kills in the loss.
Notre Dame faces host 18th-ranked Clemson (6-0), who also defeated Kentucky in three games, on Sunday at 2 p.m. EDT in the final day of the BIG Orange Bash.
