The Notre Dame volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2000 season Friday afternoon in three games (3-15, 9-15, 12-15) to #4 Nebraska at the Joyce Center in the first round of the adidas Invitational. The Irish were unable to overcome the power offense of the Huskers early in the match, but recovered to challenge Nebraska in games two and three.
Senior Jo Jameyson was the top offensive threat on the day for Notre Dame, tallying six kills on 11 attempts (.364 hitting percentage). Juniors Malinda Goralski (six kills) and Marcie Bomhack (a team-high seven kills) were the other offensive stand-outs for the Irish.
Nebraska took the first game 15-3 as Notre Dame struggled with their defense and hitting. The Irish were able to take a 12-10 lead in the third game before the Huskers scored five straight points to win the match.
Nebraska was led by senior Kim Behrends who scored 10 kills and two blocks. Husker setter Greichaly Cepero had six kills, 10 digs and 32 assists.
Notre Dame will meet #3 UCLA Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7:00 p.m., as the adidas Invitational continues. Nebraska faces #16 Michigan State at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
