NOTRE DAME, IND. — Senior libero Ryann DeJarld and freshman outside hitter Charley Niego were each named AVCA honorable mention All-Americans, the AVCA announced today.
After being named an honorable mention All-America selection in 2017, DeJarld becomes the fifth player in program history to earn the honor multiple times while Niego is the first Irish freshman to ever be tabbed an AVCA All-American.
The honors mark the 18th and 19th time a member of the Notre Dame volleyball team has earned AVCA All-America accolades, and first time two athletes have been named All-Americans in the same season since Toni Alugbue and Jeni Houser in 2012.
Earlier this month, DeJarld and Niego were each named to the AVCA All-East Coast Region team. Both earned honorable mention accolades.
ABOUT DEJARLD
DeJarld became the first player in program history to earn conference Defensive Player of the Year recognition last month when she was named the ACC’s top defender. In 2018, she paced the ACC with 532 digs and an average of 5.02 digs per set while anchoring an Irish defense that led the conference by limiting opponents to a .164 hitting percentage. Earlier this season, DeJarld became the first Notre Dame player to break the 2,000-digs threshold, and her 2,340 career digs rank third among active NCAA players. She also earned both Second Team All-ACC and CoSIDA District 5 Second Team All-Academic honors last month.
ABOUT NIEGO
Niego led the Irish attack with 339 kills and finished second to DeJarld with 307 digs in her freshman season en route to earning Second Team All-ACC honors. The Chicago, Illinois, native notched double-doubles in 12 of 18 conference contests in 2018, including a 16 kill, 29 dig effort at NC State on September 23.
