NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In a match between the last unbeaten teams in the BIG EAST Conference, the Notre Dame volleyball team posted a dominating performance over host Rutgers, 15-7, 15-9, 15-7, Saturday night in New Brunswick, N.J. With the win the Irish moved to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Scarlet Knights fell to 9-10 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Rutgers was unable to stop the Irish attack from the middle as senior team captain Mary Leffers (Tampa, Fla.) tallied 14 kills and junior middle blocker Jo Jameyson’s (Alvin, Texas) added 13 kills. Both Leffers and Jameyson were perfect offensively, posting career-high hitting percentages with phenomenal .737 (14-0-19) and .722 (13-0-18) marks, respectively. Leffers also tied for the team lead in blocks with sophomore Marcie Bomhack (Waukesha, Wis.) as both recorded seven apiece. Freshman Keara Coughlin (Chicago, Ill.) and Christi Girton (Muncie, Ind.) recorded 11 digs apiece, while junior setter Denise Boylan contributed 38 assists.
Notre Dame outhit the Scarlet Knights with a .358 team hitting percentage to Rutgers’ .135 mark. Rutgers was led by offensively by Lola Opadiran’s 14 kills, while Cheri Drake and Kera Carter both added 10 in the loss.
The Irish travel to Seton Hall Sunday for a BIG EAST Conference match against the Pirates at 1 p.m.
