NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame volleyball game survived a five-game marathon by defeating BIG EAST conference foe Providence, 12-15, 15-10, 8-15, 15-8, 15-12, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. With the win and only three regular season conference matches remaining, the Irish (14-6 overall and 8-0 in the BIG EAST) qualified for the six-team BIG EAST Tournament set for November 19-21 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Irish were led by Mary Leffers’ 18 kills, while Denise Boylan (53 assists, 10 digs), Kristy Kreher (10 kills, 18 digs) and Christi Girton (15 kills, 14 digs) all contributed double-doubles as the Irish rallied from a 2-1 deficit.
The Friars fell to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST with the loss that snapped their seven-match win streak. The Friars, who are the first BIG EAST team in 1999 to even capture a game from the Irish, got 26 kills from Annie Cella and 25 kills from Sarah Katinger.
Non-conference foe Illinois State travels to Notre Dame, Wednesday, Nov. 3, for a 7 p.m. match. The Irish then play host to BIG EAST team Syracuse, Saturday, Nov. 6, in the last home match of the season.
