The University of Notre Dame volleyball team (21-5) captured its 10th BIG EAST conference win of the season with a three game sweep of Providence (15-5, 15-10, 15-9), Sunday afternoon, at the Joyce Center. Several players starred for the Irish on the day, led by junior Marcie Bomhack (Waukesha, Wis.). Bomhack had 14 kills in the match on .700 hitting (14 kills, zero errors, 20 attempts) with five digs.
The Irish jumped out to a 11-3 lead in the first game with a display of highly-accurate hitting. Notre Dame would hit .667 in the initial game (21 kills, one error on 30 attempts), with senior setter Denise Boylan (Lisle, Ill.) compiling 16 assists. Bomhack had five kills in the game and the Irish coasted to a 15-5 game one victory.
Providence attempted to turn the tables on Notre Dame in game two, jumping to a 9-3 lead. After Irish head coach Debbie Brown called a time-out, Notre Dame rallied to score the next 12 points and win the game, led once again by Bomhack with three kills, a block and an ace.
Game three followed the pattern of the first, as Notre Dame claimed a 10-1 lead sparked by two blocks and a kill from freshman Katie Neff (St. Louis, Mo.). The Friars battled back to cut the lead down to 12-8, but a solo block on game point by senior Adrienne Shimmel (Mission Viejo, Calif.) earned the game and match victory for Notre Dame.
Senior Christi Girton (Muncie, Ind.) posted her third match of the weekend with double-digit kills by totaling 10 against Providence. Freshman setter Kristen Kinder (Fresno, Calif.) notched 21 assists in relief of Boylan in games two and three.
Next up for the Irish is a non-conference matchup Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7:00 p.m., against St. Louis. It’s the last home match of the regular season for Notre Dame before the BIG EAST volleyball tournament Nov. 18-19, which will be played in the Joyce Center.
