Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team travels to Corpus Christi, Texas to close out the fall portion of the 2001-02 schedule on Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 12-13 as the Irish participate in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Invitational. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,100-yard Kings Crossing Golf and Country Club in Corpus Christi.
The Irish begin play against the 15-team field at 8:00 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start to begin the 36 holes of play. The final 18 are scheduled for Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Besides the host school Texas A&M at Corpus Christi, the Irish will also participate with Baylor, Centenary, Chicago State, Eastern Michigan, Loyola of Chicago, McLennan Community College, Nicholls State, North Texas, Southwest Texas, Texas-Pan American and Wichita State.
Scheduled to compete for the Irish will be freshman Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, Calif.), sophomore Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.), sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.), junior Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wis.) and senior Lauren Fuchs (Louisville, Ky.).
Byrne (80.57 average) is Notre Dame’s top golfer this fall, followed by Lotta (80.86) and Taibl (82.75). The Irish last played on Oct. 15-16 at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., where they finished ninth in a 17-team field. Byrne was the team’s top finisher as she tied for 14th with a round of 78. The tournament was reduced to one round after the opening 36 holes were cancelled due to heavy rain.
