Port St. Lucie, Fla. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team closed out the final round of the Adidas Fall Invitational by firing a 19-over par 307 on Tuesday morning to give the Irish a 54-hole total of 932. That gave Notre Dame and eighth-place finish, 33 strokes off the pace of tournament champions, Baylor. The Bears shot a final round 297 to give them a one-stroke victory over the University of Arkansas. The Razorbacks shot the best round of the day with a one-over par 289 to move from fourth into second. The tournament, hosted by Notre Dame, was played at the par 72, 5,985-yard Dye Course at the PGA Village.
Baylor finished with an 899 (302-303-297) to Arkansas’ 900 (302-309-289). Third-place belonged to Missouri with a 904 (305-297-302) with Kent State and Nebraska rounding out the top five. Kent was 15 strokes off the lead with a 914 (301-306-307) and Nebraska shot a team total of 918 (301-316-301) on the way to the Cornhuskers’ fifth-place finish.
Individually, Randi Gauthier of North Texas took medalist honors with a one-under par 215 after a final round of even-par 72. Gauthier went into the final round tied with Baylor’s Hanna Svenningsson, who shot a final round 73 to finish in a second-place tie with Arkansas’s Amanda McCurdy with a 54-hole total of even par 216. McCurdy shot the low round of the day with a four-under par 68 to move into the second-place tie.
Elin Ohlsson of Missouri finished fourth, four strokes behind Gauthier with a three-over par 219 (74-72-73) and Maria Jose Hurtado of Arkansas-Little Rock closed out the top five with a four-over par 220 (74-72-74).
For Notre Dame, two golfers finished among the tourneys top 20 golfers. Junior Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) tied for 17th with a career-best 54-hole 230. Byrne fired rounds of 76, 79 and 75 on the way to her 14-over par total. Freshman Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash.) tied for 20th, one stroke behind Byrne with a 231. Bassett overcame an opening round 86 by shooting her two best rounds of the fall with a one-under par 71 on Monday and a closing round of 74.
Katie Brophy (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) was third among Irish golfers and tied for 27th overall with a 235 (81-75-79). She was followed by Terri Taibl (Sr., Elm Grove, Wis.) in 38th with a 241 (82-80-79), Suzie Hayes (Fr., Dublin, Ireland) in a tie for 40th with a 54-hole total of 245 (81-82-82) and Karen Lotta (So., Los Angeles, Calif.) in 57th with a 256 (85-86-85.
Three Notre Dame golfers played as individual participants with their scores not counting in the team totals. Freshman Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, Ohio) tied for 33rd with scores of 80, 78 and 79 for a 237. Junior Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) was 44th with a 248 (89-78-81) and Lauren Barbir (Fr., Montgomery, Tex.) tied for 48th with a 251 (84-84-83).
Coach Debby King’s golfers close out the fall schedule on Nov. 4-5 when they play in the Pine Needles Invitational at Pinehurst, N.C.
