IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Notre Dame women’s golf team stands in seventh place out of nine teams following first-round action Saturday at the Iowa Invitational.
The Irish carded a first-round score of 337 at the par-73, 5,000-yard Finkbine Golf Course and stand just four shot behind Michigan, six behind Iowa, seven behind Wisconsin and 10 behind Northwestern heading into Sunday’s final round. Indiana (307) holds an 11-shot lead over Minnesota atop the leader board.
Irish sophomore Mary Klein (Kokomo, Ind.) is tied for 18th after an opening-round 82 while junior captain Andrea Klee is just one stroke back. The rest of the Irish starting-five contingent includes freshman Kristin McMurtrie (85), sophomore Shane Smith (87) and junior Beth Cooper (90). Freshman Lauren Fuchs (87) and sophomore Danielle Villarosa (89) competed as individual entrants.
Indiana’s Erin Carney leads the individual competition, holding a four-shot lead over teammates Michelle Hatfield and Sami Montgomery.
Friday’s play was scaled back from 36 to 18 holes due to the impending weather.
