MADISON, Wis. — The Notre Dame women’s golf team opened NCAA Regional play by shooting a 299 in first round action on Monday at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin.
“The course played a lot different today than yesterday practice round due to the wind switching direction,” head coach Susan Holt said after the round. “We have now seen the course play two different ways so tomorrow we need to manage our games better to shoot some lower scores.”
Junior Emma Albrecht led the way for the Irish, carding an opening round 73, while her classmate Maddie Rose Hamilton was right behind with a 74.
“Emma and Maddie played really well,” Holt added. “If a few more putts would have dropped they could have both easily been under par.”
At one point Albrecht got her score to three-under par after making the turn at one under and then carding back-to-back birdies on the first and second holes (the Irish played the back nine first). She ultimately finished the day with four birdies, nine pars and five bogeys.
Hamilton had a consistent day for Notre Dame. After two bogeys and a par in her first three holes, the Louisville, Kentucky native had a birdie and a bogey the rest of the way to go along with 13 pars.
Playing in NCAA Regionals for the first time, freshman Abby Heck (75) and sophomore Mia Ayer (77) also scored for the Irish.
The 12th-seeded Irish will look to make up ground in Tuesday’s second round, with tee times starting at 8:54 a.m. CT. Notre Dame sits nine strokes outside of sixth place, with the top six teams advancing out of regional play to the NCAA Championships.
Virginia (279) and Duke (283) posted the two lowest team scores of the day, while Virginia’s Beth Lillie and Wisconsin’s Gabby Curtis are tied atop the player leaderboard after turning in opening round 67’s.
