Pinehurst, N.C. – The Notre Dame women’s golf team got off to a slow start at the Carolina’s Collegiate Golf Classic on Monday shooting a 62-over par, 350 for the first 18 holes at Pinehurst #8 golf course.
The Irish head into the second day of the 36-hole tournament 22nd in a field of 22 and are 34 strokes behind tournament co-leaders Georgia State University and North Carolina-Greensboro who checked in with 316 team scores on the 6,046-yard, par 72 course. The College of Charleston (318), Campbell University (318) are tied for third while four teams – Coastal Carolina, University of Kansas, Memphis and Charleston Southern – are tied for fifth with 323.
Notre Dame’s top first round finishers were senior Shane Smith (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and junior Kristin McMurtrie (Calgary, Alb.) who shot 15-over par 87 to tie for 75th.
That put them 12 shots behind co-leaders Patricia Martinson (Georgia Southern) and Meaghan Francella (Memphis) who shot three-over par 75 for the opening round.
Freshman Rebecca Rogers (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Terri Taibl (Elm Grove, Wisc.) were tied for 88th as each had an 88 and freshman Shannon Byrne (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was tied for 103rd with a 91.
The final 18 holes with be played beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tues., Feb. 25 for the final 18 holes of the tournament.
