Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s golf coach Debby King has announced the signings of two high school golfers to national letters-of-intent to attend the University beginning in the fall of 2002.
Joining King’s women’s squad in the fall will be Sarah Bassett (Spokane, Wash.) and Katie Brophy (Spokane, Wash.), two golfers who have played against each other in their high school and junior golf careers.
“Both of these players are very talented. They are hometown rivals who will be battling in the future for new Notre Dame women’s golf records,” says Debby King.
Bassett is currently a senior at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane. During the summer she turned in eight top-five finishes in the 11 tournaments she played with a 77.7 average. Bassett won the WJGA sub-District tournament at Couer d’Alene with a 74. She finished second to Brophy at the WJGA Districts held at the Spokane Country Club with a 36-hole total of 153 (74-79). Bassett also finished third at the WJGA state championship tournament at Everest with a 54-hole mark of 235 (80-80-75).
Brophy is in her senior year at Gonzaga Preparatory High School in Spokane. During the 2001 spring schedule she had an average of 76.08 with four third-place finishes, five seconds and was the winner of the Richland Invitational finishing first in a field of 155 golfers with a two-under par 70. She was second at her District tournament with an even-par 142 (71-71) and finished third at the State championships in a field of 80 with a 154 total (78-76).
Brophy’s summer included two first-place finishes at WJGA Subdistrict tourneys, a first place finish at the District 5 Championship and a first place finish (in a field of 72) at the Girl’s Jr. America’s Cup with a three-over par 216 (74-72-70). For the summer, she averaged a 75.73 for ten tournaments.
