EAST LANSING, Mich. — The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team stands tied for fourth place among 13 teams after 36 holes of play Saturday at the Mary Fossum Invitational, held at the par-72, 5,826-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course. The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
Notre Dame stood tied for fifth after an opening-round 308–equaling the fifth-best round in the program’s 10-year history–but slipped into a tie with Ohio University for fourth after a 321 in the afternoon round for a 629 total heading into the final round.
Irish Junior captain Andrea Klee (Appleton, Wis.) is one of four players tied for eighth place in the 89-player field after carding matching rounds of 77 for a 154 total. Klee has counted to the team score in 25 of 26 rounds over the past two years.
Sophomore Becca Schloss (77-80; Bloomsburg, Pa.) is tied for 20th while classmate Mary Klein (76-83; Kokomo, Ind.) and junior Brigid Fisher (78-81; Augusta, Ga.) are among several players tied for 26th at 159. Newcomer Shane Smith (83-84; St. Petersburg, Fla.), a sophomore transfer from SMU, and junior Beth Cooper (84-86; Kalamazoo, Mich.) did not factor into the team scoring under the play-six/count four format.
Freshman Kristin McMurtrie (82-84; Calgary, Alb.) had a solid debut for the Irish while playing as an individual entrant while sophomore Danielle Villarosa (Verona, N.J.) carded rounds of 88 and 87 as an individual.
