Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne has announced the 2004 women’s lacrosse schedule for the upcoming spring season.
For the second season in a row, Coyne and her squad will play an aggressive schedule that features five teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament and nine teams that finished last season ranked among the top 20 in the nation.
In the preseason, the Irish open early with a contest versus Team Canada on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Loftus Center. The following week, Feb. 21, the Irish will participate in Princeton’s preseason tournament that features the national champion Tigers along with Dartmouth and Ohio State, playing mini-games throughout the day.
The Irish will open the regular season on the road in California as they open with the University of California on Fri., Feb. 27 and then face Stanford on Sun., Feb. 29. The home opener comes the following weekend when the Irish play host to Cornell at the Loftus Center on Sun., March 7 in a noon start.
“We are excited about the schedule that we will play this spring,” says Coyne.
“We have five teams that made it to the NCAA tournament a year ago and nine ranked teams. Our schedule is one of the most competitive that we’ve ever had. The team looks forward to the challenge ahead.”
In BIG EAST play, the Irish will play host to Virginia Tech, Boston College and Syracuse while traveling to Georgetown, Rutgers and Connecticut.
The Irish will face nine teams that finished 2003 ranked in the top 20 include: Duke (#4), Georgetown (#6), James Madison (#8), Syracuse (#10), Ohio State (#11), Cornell (#12), Stanford (#15), Johns Hopkins (#17) and Vanderbilt (#18). Notre Dame finished the year ranked 16th in the final IWLCA poll.
