NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-0 lead and used goals from eight different players to beat Columbia 15-4 on Saturday at Moose Krause Stadium. Notre Dame led 11-1 at halftime and held a 32-12 advantage in shots to improve to 5-8 on the season. Columbia, which plays Harvard on Sunday, falls to 5-6. The Irish return to action when they play host to Harvard at noon on Monday.
Junior Kathryn Perrella helped the Irish build an early lead by scoring three of her game-high four goals in the first eight minutes. After freshman Angela Dixon converted a transition goal 14 seconds following the opening draw, Perrella scored three consecutive goals in 5:14 for a 4-0 Irish lead. She scored on a goal assisted from freshman Danielle Shearer, an unassisted goal and a free-position goal. A goal by sophomore Tina Fedarcyk was sandwiched between consecutive goals from sophomores Natalie Loftus and Kathryn Lam. Shearer and freshman Kelly McCardell scored at 4:07 and 0:58 to push the lead to 11-0. Columbia freshman Meredith Corkery then scored the first of her three goals with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.
Notre Dame opened the second half with a fourth goal from Perrella at 21:43 and a single tally from sophomore Maureen Whitaker at 19:50 for a 13-1 lead. Corkery scored her second goal at 18:50 before Shearer recorded her second score at 8:51. After Loftus’ third goal at 6:10 closed the scoring for the Irish, Corkery netted her third goal at 3:50, and junior Maureen Koons converted a free-position shot at 1:53 for the 15-4 final score.
The Lions controlled 11 of the 21 draws, while Notre Dame held a 38-19 advantage in groundballs. Irish junior goalkeeper Tara Durkin had nine saves in 51 minutes while allowing just two goals. Sophomore Gina Kline had nine saves in the net for the Lions. Freshman Jen White had one save and allowed two goals in the final nine minutes in relief of Durkin.
