Women's Lacrosse Drops 10-9 Decision To #10 Cornell

March 19, 2002

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal first half deficit only to fall a goal short as the Irish dropped a 10-9 decision to 10th-ranked Cornell Tuesday afternoon at Meyo Field in the Loftus Sports Center.

Senior midfielder Jaimee Reynolds paced the Big Red attack with three goals (including the game-winner) and one assist while sophomore midfielder Jaime Quinn scored twice with an assist.

Sophomore Kassen Delano (Alexandria, Va.) led the Irish with two goals and an assist while top scorer Danielle Shearer (Sr., Hampstead, Md.) and sophomore Meredith Simon (Flemington, N.J.) each scored twice in the game.

The loss snaps 15th-ranked Notre Dame’s four-game winning streak and drops the Irish to 4-1 on the season while Cornell improves to 4-0 on the campaign.

Notre Dame got off to a slow start in this contest falling behind 5-1 midway through the first half and trailed 8-3 at the break.

After Cornell’s Quinn and Notre Dame’s Alissa Moser (Sr., North Wales, Pa.) traded goals, the Big Red ran off four consecutive tallies. Reynolds got her first of the game at 22:36 and was followed by Quinn, with her second, Beth Calder and Lindsay Steinberg for a 5-1 lead with 12:47 left in the half.

Delano got her first of the game at 11:53 when her pass from 20-yards out managed to get behind Big Red goalkeeper Carrie Ciancola. Lauren Fischer (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) cut the lead to 5-3 when she scored a free position goal at 6:03.

Cornell then closed out the period with three consecutive goals over the final 5:48 for the 8-3 lead at the half.

Notre Dame adjusted at halftime and put the pressure on Cornell as they fought to get back in the game. Shearer got her first goal of the second half at 19:31 and Eleanor Weille (Jr., Garden City, N.J.) converted a Natalie Loftus (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) feed at 18:13 to cut the lead to 8-5.

The Big Red regained the four-goal lead at 9-5 when Sarah Averson beat Irish goalkeeper Jen White (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) with a free position shot at 15:46.

The Irish resumed the comeback as they ran off the next three goals. Simon (14:53), Shearer (11:36) and Delano (9:55) cut the lead to 9-8.

But Cornell’s top scorer, Reynolds, came up with her third goal of the night at 7:26 to give the Big Red a two-goal cushion at 10-8.

The defenses tightened and the Irish got their final goal of the night with 15 seconds left when Simon scored a free position goal to make it 10-9.

Cornell controlled the final draw and the Irish never got a shot on goal to suffer their first defeat of the season.

In the game, Cornell outshot the Irish 23-22. White made nine saves in goal for Notre Dame while Giancola came up with six stops for the Big Red.

Notre Dame returns to action at home on Tuesday, March 26 when the Irish play host to Delaware in a 4:00 p.m. game at Moose Krause Stadium.
