Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame, Ind. … Duke’s Meghan Miller scored her second goal of the game with 15 seconds left in the third overtime period to give the Blue Devils a hard-fought 10-9 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Friday afternoon at Moose Krause Stadium.
The loss was the third of the season for the Irish with all three losses coming to ranked teams and by one goal. The ninth-ranked Irish fall to 8-3 on the season while Duke improves to 7-4 on the year.
Notre Dame never led in the game and had to rally from a two-goal deficit with 1:40 left on goals by Maureen Henwood (Sr., Marlton, N.J.) and Meredith Simon (So., Flemington, N.J.) to send the game to overtime.
Duke was led offensively by junior midfielder Lauren Gallagher who scored three goals and added three assists for a six-point afternoon. Miller also added two goals while the Blue Devils got solo goals from five other players. Notre Dame got two goals from Henwood and Natalie Loftus (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) while Danielle Shearer (Jr., Hampstead, Md.) had a goal and two assists.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 5:09 on goals by Caline McHenry, Miller and Gallagher. Loftus got the Irish on the board with her first of two in the game with 24:43 left in the first half. Corrine Broseler restored Duke to a three-goal lead at 4-1 when she scored on a Gallagher set up with 23:05 left.
From there the defenses stiffened as the next goal game almost 14 minutes later when Alissa Moser (Sr., North Wales, Pa.) raced down the middle and fired a shot past Kristen Foster with 9:45 left in the half. The Irish went into intermission trailing by one goal at 4-3 after Anne Riley (Jr., Marblehead, Mass.) scored off a Moser feed at 4:40.
Erin O’Shaughnessy restored the Duke lead to 5-3 when she scored just 32 seconds into the second half. Notre Dame tied the game on a free position goal by Loftus and a Shearer marker at 20:50.
Duke went ahead 6-5 on a goal by Jessica Bennett (19:40) but that was answered by Eleanor Weille (Jr. Garden City, N.Y.) at 16:55. The Irish could not get the goal they needed to go ahead over the next nine minutes before Duke broke through to make it 8-6 on goals by Gallagher (7:34) and Claire Sullivan (6:33).
The two-goal lead looked insurmountable, as the Irish could not dent Foster. They finally broke through when Henwood was knocked down in front and awarded a free position shot with 1:40 left and converted. Simon then was able to beat the Duke defense and score from in close with 19 seconds left to tie the game.
In the first overtime period (two, three-minute stanzas), both team teams scored in the second period. Gallagher got her third of the game on a free position shot with 2:43 left and Henwood got her second of the game off a Shearer assist with 1:52 left.
After one scoreless sudden-death period, Miller ended the game after 71:45 when she beat Jen White (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) from in close for the 10-9 win.
Duke outshot the Irish in the game 31-30. Foster made 12 saves in the game, while White made a career-high 15 for the Irish.
Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday, April 14 when the Irish play host to Yale in a 2:00 p.m. game at Moose Krause Stadium.
