NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team entered Sunday’s game looking for its second consecutive win over a top-10 team after beating seventh-ranked Yale last week but fifth-ranked Georgetown proved too much, as the visiting Hoyas used an 8-0 run over 15:28 on its way to a 17-7 win over the Irish. Georgetown clinched at least a share of the first-ever BIG EAST Conference championship with a 5-0 conference record and 10-2 mark overall. Notre Dame falls to 8-4, 3-1 in the BIG EAST and returns to action at 4:00 p.m. on Wed., April 25, with the second of three straight home games at Moose Krause Stadium.

Hoya junior Erin Elbe led all scorers with four goals, junior Natalie Loftus and freshman Meredith Simon each scored twice for the Irish. Georgetown outshot Notre Dame 30-19, while the Irish controlled 14 of 26 draws. The Hoyas held a 23-19 advantage in groundballs and caused 15 of Notre Dame’s 23 turnovers. The Irish caused seven of the Hoyas’ 14 turnovers. Hoya senior goaltender Bowen Holden allowed just four goals while saving nine shots in 46:44 of action. Irish sophomore Jen White gave up 15 goals in 47:33.

The Hoyas opened the game with four goals in the first 4:05 on a pair of goals by junior Kate Ahearn and single scores by senior Sheehan Stanwick and senior Sarah Oglesby. Junior Tina Fedarcyk put Notre Dame on the board at 21:27 when she scored in transition on a pass from junior Alissa Moser. After sophomore Wick Stanwick scored a free-position goal for a 5-1 lead, the Irish netted consecutive scores to pull within 5-3.

Senior Maura Doyle converted a free-position shot at 19:24, before Loftus brought Notre Dame within two scores at 15:25. Georgetown held the Irish scoreless for the next 28:41 and scored eight goals in that time — including three straight from Elbe and two from Sheehan Stanwick to break the game open with a 13-3 lead with 26:25 left in the game. Loftus broke the dry spell for the Irish with a free-position goal at 16:44. After four more Hoya goals, Notre Dame ended the game with three consecutive goals, two from Simon and a free-position goal from senior Lael O’Shaughnessy.
