NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team led 10-8 midway through the second half but could not score again as Harvard rallied for a 12-10 win on Monday at Moose Krause Stadium. Irish junior Lael O’Shaughnessy, who scored her 100th-career goal in the first half, netted a pair of quick goals to open the second half and give Notre Dame a 9-7 lead. The Crimson defense would limit the Irish to just one goal in the final 27:03 of the game to rally for the win. The Irish fall to 5-9 with the loss and close out the season at Rutgers on Sat., April 29.
The teams entered halftime tied at seven after trading leads in the first half. Harvard scored first at 24:32 before three different players scored in 2:52 for a 3-1 Irish lead at 20:29. After the teams traded goals, the Crimson scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead at 10:54. After O’Shaughnessy scored her first goal of the game and the 100th of her career at Notre Dame, Alli Harper scored twice to give the Crimson a 7-5 lead with 5:58 left in the first half. After another goal by O’Shaughnessy at 2:57, sophomore Natalie Loftus scored a free-position goal with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game heading into halftime.
After O’Shaughnessy’s two goals in the first 2:57 of the second half, the Irish controlled play for stretches in the next 10 minutes but could not build on their lead — at one point hitting the pipe on consecutive shots. Harvard’s Hilary Walton cut the lead to 9-8 with her goal at 16:15. Loftus scored 40 seconds later for a 10-8 Irish lead. Harper scored her fourth goal of the game at 11:47 to cut the lead to 10-9, before Jamie Hagerman tied the game at 8:53. Gretchen Puttkamer’s only goal gave Harvard the lead for good at 5:45, while Megan Austin scored an insurance goal at 3:22. The Crimson controlled the ensuing draw and was able to run out the clock in their 12-10 win.
