PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team concluded its season with a 14-7 loss at 19th-ranked Rutgers on Saturday. Freshman Anne Riley led the Irish with two goals, while junior goalkeeper Tara Durkin had 14 saves. Liz Chambers scored five goals for Rutgers. Notre Dame ends its fourth season of women’s lacrosse with a 5-10 record.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a free-position goal from junior Kathryn Perrella at 27:32 before Rutgers scored five consecutive goals to a 5-1 lead at 10:37. Another free-position goal from Riley at 7:53 snapped the Irish scoring drought before junior Lael O’Shaughnessy pulled the Irish within 5-3 at 6:27. After a Rutgers timeout, the Scarlet Knights won the ensuing draw and raced down for a score at 6:18. Rutgers then took a 7-3 into halftime with another goal at 1:50.
The Scarlet Knights opened the second half with a goal at 23:38 for an 8-3 lead but the Irish held Rutgers scoreless for the next 10 minutes and cut into the lead with two goals. Riley scored on another free-position goal at 19:03 and Tina Fedarcyk tallied a score at 15:13 to bring Notre Dame within 8-3. The Irish then suffered through yet another scoring drought as they have many times this season when Rutgers reeled off five consecutive goals once again to lead 13-5 with 2:56 remaining. Notre Dame finally scored again with one minute remaining on a goal from sophomore Maureen Whitaker. Freshman Danielle Shearer scored with 34 seconds remaining, before Rutgers closed out the scoring with 15 seconds left for the 14-7 final.
The Scarlet Knights held a 32-29 edge in shots, while the Irish had 29 groundballs to 20 for Rutgers. Notre Dame also controlled 12 of 23 draws. Lauren Gulotta had 18 saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights.
