The 23rd-ranked Notre Dame women?s swimming and diving team defeated 11th-ranked Northwestern and Rice in a pair of dual meets on Friday night at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. Five different swimmers won five individual events and Gina Ketelhohn swept the diving as the Irish defeated the Wildcats 158-141. Against the Owls, Notre Dame won 12 of 14 individual events to beat Rice 207-87. The Irish improved to 8-0 with the wins and returns to the pool on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. against Illinois.
In the victory over Northwestern, Kelly Hecking won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.65, edging Dominique Diezi?s time of 57.03 in the fourth event. Allison Newell, Liz Barger and Amy Deger gave the Irish the lead after the 200 butterfly, the sixth event, by finishing first, third and fourth, respectively. Alison Newell posted a winning time of 2:03.06. The Wildcats regained the lead after the 50 freestyle but Ketelhohn, Rhiana Saunders and Heather Mattingly placed first, second and fourth in the one-meter diving as the Irish gained the lead for good. After the diving break, Carrie Nixon won a tight 100 freestyle race with a time of 51.72, nipping Northwestern?s Diezi (51.73) and Courtney Allen (51.74).
The Irish increased their lead 112-94 after Shannon Suddarth led a sweep of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.72. After Barger (56.00) and Nixon (56.09) finished one-two in the 100 butterfly, Ketelhohn, Karli Richards, Mattingly and Saunders swept the three-meter diving to give Notre Dame its largest lead 147-116. Northwestern won the final two events for the final score of 158-141. Hecking, Suddarth, Barger and Nixon had given the Irish a quick lead by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:48.27 to begin the meet.
Ketelhohn, Newell and Nixon were double winners against Rice. Barger, Deger, Hecking, Lloyd and Suddarth also were winners against the Owls
